CLOTHING
Dust-free Storage
Store your vintage garments in a cool, dry, and dust-free environment away from direct sunlight. If necessary, keep the garments in fabric dress-bags together with herbal sachets—they are perfect natural insect repellants.
Hang them up well
Use wooden (best padded) hangers. Avoid metal hangers—they leave rust stains and stretch marks! For delicate (e.g. lace) items, don't hang; fold them.
Hand-wash
Beaded garments are hand-washable. The rinsing and spinning cycle in washing machines can make certain delicate fabrics shrink and shred. If you'd like to dry-clean your vintage items, it would be best to consult the dry-cleaning specialists before doing so.
Wash them less
Good airing is recommended as it can help your garments get rid of bothering odour.
JEWELLERIES
Storage
Store your vintage jewelleries in a cool, dry, smoke-free, and dust-free environment, avoiding direct exposure to sunlight and moisture. Do not store vintage jewelleries in plastic bags, which easily produce moisture and can damage your jewelleries.
If at all possible, separately store jewelleries according to their materials. For instance, keeping gold and silver together could lead to chemical reactions and cause damage.
Storing your jewelleries with their original packaging, if still present at all, will add to their future resale value. Avoid contact with perfume, hair spray, and makeup by putting your jewelleries on last and avoid wearing them during vigorous activities.
Cleaning
Gently brush your items with a soft-bristle toothbrush to eliminate dust. Dip the toothbrush in clean water and continue cleaning. Do not soak the jewelleries in water. Dry the items with a lint-free towel. Use this method when you’re cleaning vintage jewelleries that have gemstones or pearls.
For gold accessories that do not contain any jewels, prepare a solution of one part ammonia to two parts water in a glass bowl. Quickly dip the jewellries in the solution, brush with a soft-bristle brush and dry with a towel.
For silver accessories that do not contain any jewels, make a thick paste of baking soda and water. Gently rub the paste on the piece with a cloth. Rinse the jewelleries with water and dry. Then, using a soft toothbrush, gently brush the entire piece.
Make sure the jewelleries are dry before you put them away. To thoroughly dry the jewelleries, place them on a dry towel and leave overnight. After they are completely dry, store your antique jewelleries in a fabric-lined box or in a glass display case.
